Picture of anal fistula during surgery

I went to see the doctor today and he says things are healing well. It’s been a little over a month now and the wound is still open but it’s very shallow now. I’m still driving down to see the district nurses every second day or so. Still working, shitting etc.. with no pain.

Anyway I asked the doctor for a picture he took during surgery and so without further or do… here it is (ultra graphic)

WIthout a doubt the worst thing about my Fistula in Ano I endure is the mess it sometimes leaves when & where it shouldn’t. I sometimes wake & there is blood, mucous &/or faeces stains on my bedsheets. I can’t abide pyjamas so sleep on a towel but sometimes it or I move & the result deposits where it shouldn’t.

Don’t care about the discomfort. It’s not pain except in the early days of a Cutting Seton. The experience of realising there is more liquid on the pad in my undies than the pad can hold is far worse than any pain. Don’t want to shre the visible results of this thing with any one round me & don’t want to look like I am incontinent, which despite 3corrective procedures I am not.

The several procedures to plug/remove the fistula all failed. Seton is a permanent fixture. It’s a bit of a problem but let’s be realistic. I was so ill before the medico’s discovered the abcess and drained it that I thought anything would be better. Well, I have ‘anything’ and it is better, so being ungrateful is not right.

I am sorry about the 3 surgeries u had to go through. even i had two.i know the feeling of uncertainity you are going through.i had a seton for almost a year.everything will be fine dont worry

  7. 7 Chris January 14, 2013 at 6:27 am

Thanks for the encouraging words. Unfortunately my 3 attempts to seal/block the fistula have taken place over 18 months and I have at least one more trial to undergo. The incisions take a while to heal don’t they?

  8. 8 j January 16, 2013 at 12:52 pm

My first surgery incision (that is when they placed the seton )healed very fast. I had a draining seton placed and when I went back the dr said it will take may be two or more surgeries and I was so depressed. I decided to wait and get a second opinion. The seton made life bearable since the pain from the fistula had come down since the seton drained it continuously.i had to keep a gauze mostly I kept tissue paper with vaseline spread on it since the seton sometimes got stuck and it was painful.
I then went for sugery to a new place where the drs assured me that they can heal the fistula in one go they were not very impressed with seton and said should I have gone to them first i wouldnt have needed the seton in the first place.
This surgery incision was a lot more deeper and it took almost a month before I can sit without pain and the incison took almost two months to heal comletely (mine was one of the deepest inscisons they had to give because there was multiple fistulas and ofcourse the setonwhich they did not like at all). the cleaning of the wound was what they emphasized the most and they wanted it to heal slowly from the inside . now it is almost a year after the surgery and i am living a happy life .feel free to ask me any doubts ,and all the best for your surgery.

Thanks for the encouraging words. It seems some people are doomed to more problems with them than others. I have spoken to people who had 1 operation complete success and all ok. Others experience so much pain it’s not funny and yet others face surgery after surgery.

I am presently facing a colostomy to enable the abcess to heal over a 6 months period. I have had 4 seton’s installed and 3 procedures to block or eradicate the fistula. Problem is, the more times it is tried the greater the chaqnce of damage to the anal muscles and for incontinence to become a factor.

I have a good surgeon who is investigating everything possible to provide the best result and who has said that we can only go forward from hereon with the benefit of a separate surgical opinion. All in the lap of fate from here on. C

  10. 10 j January 22, 2013 at 2:32 pm

yes all we can do is trust and hope the surgeon knows what he is doing and pray that God is with you. and also do not lose hope anything is better than this constant pain. everything will be ok.

  11. 11 parsonsconsultancy January 23, 2013 at 12:20 am

My surgeon sent me to another specialist for a second opinion. That happened yesterday. Second surgeon says there is a chance that there may be a second, as yet, undiscovered track into the abcess site feeding infective material into it and negating the procedures to block/seal/remove the fistula.

He and my original surgeon are going back in to see if this may be the case with me. Stay tuned about a fortnight for the next episode.

Hi.i had anal fistula being removed at lenmed bokamoso hospital.the wound is still deep with little to moderate pain and it shows some improvements of healing.its four weeks now.

  22. 22 Chris Parsons September 10, 2013 at 1:44 am

I haven’t looked in for a while. Sorry for being so slack. It seems my problems don’t end. I had more surgery in June and this time the Cutting Seton Drain has worked in part but there is still infective material being introduced into the original abcess site so I am off for an MRI scan to see what gives. If there is another fistula feeding the abcess then at least the surgeons can attend to it and I may finally get somewhere.

I have undergone 10 operations between the original abcess draining and now. Several Seton drains have been installed over time but for some reason or another they have always failed to correct the issue completely.

I am told that one way to fix it may be to re-sect the bowel and divert it to a stoma (Colostomy) but even that isn’t guaranteed. So, once the MRI discloses what, if any other problems exist then I can make a decision about which way to go. I don’t want to have a Seton Drain in place permanently. Tired of the continual flood of blood, mucous and fecal matter dribbling into my undies.

Hope all goes well with you Bekel.

Today I used a big mirror cause i wanted to see the wound it’s not deep but the skin over the wound turnd into white colore.

what is wrong with me. ??

    thank you for posting

    i’m really in pain
everything just turned to be so dark in my eyes

  25. 25 chuck November 23, 2013 at 1:18 pm

    sorry to read that John.Adam,

I’m one month into the recovery after my fistuletomy and starting on the beginning of the 4th week the wound began to show a whiteness around the edges. I didn’t have any withe stuff coming out though. I believe the whiteness on the edges is newly formed skin meaning it is healing. I have had my wife take pictures periodically of the wound so we can gauge the progress and I have noticed a lot of progress in from week 3 to 4. I am hopeful this is going to all be healed up soon. I can finally drive again and walk normal. I was lucky and never had much pain post surgery. Hang in there john!

  26. 26 Chris Parsons November 29, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Keep persisting Chuck. Fistula’s are their very own frustration and unfortunately an invisible one. People who have not endured one do not understand.

I am still trying to get mine fixed. So far, from the original surgery to drain the abcess (when it was discovered in May 2011) I have undergone 10 procedures with limited success. About to go in for another one after an MRI Scan to determine what is causing the fistula to re-open.

I have suggested the surgeon install a zip but he responded by saying a velcro fastening might be better. Nice to have a surgeon with a sense of humour.

Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers?

I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any
    recommendations?

  30. 30 Chris Parsons August 10, 2014 at 12:41 am

I don’t think Hackers are much concerned with the malfunctioning of nether regions in people with a fistula, so I don’t worry too much. Mind you, if my health issue suddenly gets splashed all over someone’s Blog because a Hacker thought it interesting I surmise it was a slow news day in the Internet.

As to other ‘sensitive’ information in my computer I lead such a boring life that the highlight (or is it lowlight?) of my data might be the Fistula.

I have, (three & a half years) an open wound on my perineum. (three with a Seton Drain). This despite a number of operations to rid me of the problem.

I could give up & accept the Drain as part of my life but I don’t want to. So, to the bewilderment of the very good surgeon who oversees this progress I am persevering.

After the next visit I will know what next. He is considering a colostomy (for 6 months) to see if isolating the infected area will allow anti-biotics to overcome persistent infection. Subject to what he says, I agree to this course if it is necessary.

Fact is I have undergone about 11 surgical processes to try to rid myself of the infection. The problem appears to be what bacterium causes the original infection. If it’s something that anti-biotics can kill, the issue is simple and surgery usually rids the body of the problem. The trouble is that so many bacteria now are resistant that this course is not always open.

Anyway, apart from the obvious discomforts and the weekly cost of sanitary napkins to collect drained material from the open wound it isn’t much to worry about. I gets to be a pain or course but a pain in the neck (of the backside) rather than actual pain for most of the time.

I think what you posted was very logical. But, what about
this? suppose you typed a catchier post title? I ain’t suggesting
your information isn’t good., however suppose you added a title that makes

You might glance at Yahoo’s home page and see how

Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little bit more interesting.

It has the which signifies that we assign to it and that we find for it, not that another person like a religious leader assigns for us. Most of us discover that not debilitating however empowering.
